The Mountain by Warren Glover
I could see through the window of the airplane
the majesty of the mountain.
In the morning light it looked just like glass
as the snow reflected off the sun.
We passed through cloud,
bathing the mountain in shadow.
I turned to see inside the cabin
the plain gray interior, infinitely inferior
to the marvel of nature outside.
We landed.
Behind the glass of his booth
the official, in his plain drab uniform,
made me fill out an immigration card.
I studied his five o'clock shadow
as he stamped my passport hard.
Under the artificial light I sneaked a peek,
the mountain the symbol of this place.
